ولد توبيــــاس هورتـــــــر عـــام 1972 ودرس الفلســــفة والرياضيـــــــات فــــي جامعتَـــــي ميونــــخ وبيركلي، وحصــل علــى دكتــــــوراه فـــي الــرياضيـــــات. يكتــــــب عـــــن العلـــــوم والتكنــــــولوجيـــــــا والفلســــــــفة للمجـــــــلات والصحــــف منـذ عـــام 2000. عمــل محررًا علميًّا في مجلة "إم آي تي تكـنولوجي ريفيــــو" وجريـــــدة "دي تسـايت"، ونائـــب رئيـــــس تحــــرير مجلـــــة "هوهي لوفـــت" الفلسفية التي شارك فـي تأسيسها. يعمــل اليـــوم صــحفيًّـــــا مستقلًّا لبعض المجــــلات والجــرائد مثل "هوهي لوفت" و"دي تسايت" وغيرهما.
فـي عيد القديســين لعام 2011، سقـط من ارتفاع 37 مترًا، ولحسن الحظ وقع على حافة منعته من الســقوط في هاوية يزيد عمقها على 500 مترٍ. في عام 2013 حكى عن تجربته في مواجهة الموت شـــبه المـــــؤكــد فــي كتــــابـــه: "المــــوت فيلسوف: كيف أوصلني الســـقوط من جبلٍ إلى معنى الحياة". صدر له أيضًا: "عالم مجنون من الأكوان المتوازية" عام 2009، "أنت ما تنام: ماذا يحدث بين الاستيقاظ والحلم" عام 2011.
