نشأت روث وير في ساسكس، على الساحل الجنوبي لإنجلترا. بعد تخرجها من جامعة مانشستر انتقلت إلى باريس قبل أن تستقر في شمال لندن. عملت نادلة وبائعة كتب ومعلمة للغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية ومسؤولة صحفية. وهي متزوجة ولديها طفلان صغيران، وفيلم In a Dark, Dark Wood هو أول فيلم تشويق لها.
